Specific Learning Disorder (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia)
Is your child smart and chatty, yet struggles to read, spell, write neatly or do simple maths — even with extra tuition? Specific learning disorder is a persistent difficulty in reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia) or maths (dyscalculia) in a child with normal intelligence (ICD-11 6A03). It is a recognised disability under India's RPwD Act 2016, and certified students can receive board-exam accommodations.
How common is it?
About 5–15 in 100 school-age children (DSM-5-TR).
Who is at higher risk?
- Family history of reading or learning problems
- Premature birth
- Speech delay
- ADHD (often occurs together)
Signs & symptoms
- Slow, effortful reading; guessing words; poor comprehension
- Mixing up b/d or p/q beyond age 7–8; poor spelling; messy, slow handwriting
- Difficulty with counting, tables and calculation
- Good verbal answers but poor written marks; avoids homework, low confidence
What causes it?
Differences in how the brain processes sounds, letters and numbers — strongly inherited. It is not laziness or low intelligence.

- She knows everything when I ask orally, but her written paper is a disaster.
- Tuition hasn't helped at all.

Frequently asked questions
At what age can autism or ADHD be diagnosed?
Autism can often be identified by 18–24 months; ADHD is usually diagnosed from about age 5–6.
Will my child outgrow a learning disability?
SLD is lifelong, but with early remedial support children learn strategies and do well.
Is screen time a cause of autism?
No. But too much screen time can delay speech and attention, so limit it for all young children.
