What is CBT?

Ever noticed how one thought — "I'll fail," "They don't like me" — can ruin your whole day? Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, developed by Dr. Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is based on a simple, powerful idea: our thoughts, feelings and actions are connected. When we change unhelpful thinking and behaviour patterns, our emotions change too. CBT is the most widely researched form of psychotherapy in the world.

How CBT works

  1. Identify unhelpful automatic thoughts ("I always mess up")
  2. Examine them against the evidence, like a detective
  3. Replace them with balanced, realistic thoughts
  4. Change behaviour through graded activity, exposure and problem-solving
  5. Practise skills between sessions with short, structured homework

How CBT is effective for mental health disorders

  • Depression: CBT is a first-line psychological treatment in WHO and NICE guidelines; it lifts mood through behavioural activation and changing negative thinking, and lowers the risk of relapse.
  • Anxiety disorders (GAD, panic, social anxiety, phobias): CBT is the most effective psychological treatment, teaching the brain that feared situations and sensations are safe.
  • OCD: CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention is the recommended treatment.
  • Insomnia: CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended as the first treatment before sleeping pills.
  • Eating disorders, health anxiety, anger and low self-esteem: specialised CBT programmes show strong results.
  • Students: reduces exam anxiety and improves concentration and performance.
