Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Every child develops at their own pace — but some differences need more than "wait and watch." About 1 in 7 young people worldwide lives with a mental health condition (WHO), and many neurodevelopmental conditions can be spotted before school age.

Autism

Early assessment gives children the best chance to learn, connect and thrive. These pages are written for parents and teachers.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Is your toddler not responding to their name, not pointing, avoiding eye contact, or lining up toys for hours? Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects social communication and involves repetitive behaviours or intense, narrow interests (ICD-11 6A02). Every autistic child is different — that's why it's called a spectrum.

How common is it?

About 1 in 100 children worldwide (WHO). Boys are diagnosed 3–4 times more often.

Who is at higher risk?

  • An older sibling with autism
  • Older parents
  • Premature birth
  • Certain genetic conditions (e.g. Fragile X)
  • Some medicines in pregnancy. Vaccines do not cause autism

Signs & symptoms

  • Little eye contact; not responding to name by 12 months
  • Not pointing or showing things by 12–18 months; delayed or lost speech
  • Prefers playing alone; difficulty with pretend play and understanding feelings
  • Hand-flapping, rocking, spinning; repeating words (echolalia)
  • Upset by small changes in routine; intense focus on specific topics
  • Over- or under-sensitive to sounds, textures, lights or food

What causes it?

Mostly genetic (about 80%) and differences in early brain development before birth.

How to know if your child is struggling — you may relate if…

  • He doesn't look when I call him, but reacts to the TV jingle.
  • She used to say a few words and then stopped.
  • He gets very upset if we take a different route home.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can autism or ADHD be diagnosed?

Autism can often be identified by 18–24 months; ADHD is usually diagnosed from about age 5–6.

Will my child outgrow a learning disability?

SLD is lifelong, but with early remedial support children learn strategies and do well.

Is screen time a cause of autism?

No. But too much screen time can delay speech and attention, so limit it for all young children.
