What is Trauma-Focused Therapy?
When something terrifying happens, the memory can stay "stuck" — returning as flashbacks, nightmares and constant fear. Trauma-focused therapy is a group of evidence-based treatments, including Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), that help the mind process the memory safely so it becomes part of the past.
How it works
- Phase 1 — Safety & stabilisation: grounding, breathing and emotional-regulation skills
- Phase 2 — Processing: gently revisiting the memory at your pace and changing beliefs such as "It was my fault" or "Nowhere is safe"
- Phase 3 — Reconnection: rebuilding trust, routine, relationships and meaning
How it is effective for mental health disorders
- PTSD: trauma-focused CBT is recommended by WHO and NICE guidelines as a first-line treatment and significantly reduces flashbacks, avoidance and hyper-alertness.
- Complex PTSD: a phased approach helps with emotion regulation, self-worth and relationships.
- Children and teens after abuse or disaster: TF-CBT with caregivers is one of the best-supported child trauma treatments.
- Depression, anxiety and substance use linked to trauma often improve as the trauma heals.
