Addiction Treatment & De-Addiction Counselling

Addiction — whether to alcohol, drugs, or behaviours like gaming, internet use, or gambling — rarely happens in isolation. It affects relationships, careers, physical health, and self-worth, often leaving both the individual and their family feeling stuck in a cycle that seems impossible to break. Recovery is possible, but it requires the right clinical support, not just willpower.

At Mind Detox Centre, addiction counselling is led by Dr. Rabya Umman, who holds specialized, internationally recognized training in addiction treatment from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, U.S. Department of State, and gained extensive clinical experience treating substance use disorders during her tenure at AIIMS. Her doctoral research also focused specifically on internet addiction among students — giving her a rare depth of expertise across both substance and behavioural addictions.

Why addiction needs specialised care

Addiction is one of India's most common — and most hidden — health problems. According to the national survey Magnitude of Substance Use in India (AIIMS, 2019):

  • About 16 crore Indians use alcohol, and about 5.7 crore have harmful or dependent use.
  • About 72 lakh cannabis users and 60 lakh opioid users need help for their use.
  • Only about 1 in 38 people with alcohol dependence receive any treatment.

Behind these numbers are families living with broken promises, financial loss, conflict, violence and fear. Many people want to stop but cannot, because addiction changes the brain's reward system. Others are pushed into short-term “detox” without any psychological treatment, so relapse follows within weeks. Shame and stigma stop families from seeking help until a crisis — a hospital admission, a lost job or a legal problem — forces it.

Newer addictions are rising too: online betting, fantasy gaming, gaming and endless scrolling are affecting students and young professionals, often with the same pattern of loss of control, secrecy and debt.

The gap: most people receive either no help or only medical detox. Lasting recovery needs a clear diagnosis, treatment of the underlying causes, family involvement and long-term relapse prevention. That is exactly what Mind Detox Centre provides.

Why addiction needs specialised care

Common Challenges in Addiction

  • Alcohol and drug dependence — physical and psychological reliance that feels impossible to control alone
  • Behavioural addictions — excessive use of the internet, gaming, social media, or gambling that disrupts daily life
  • Relapse cycles — repeated attempts to quit followed by returning to the substance or behaviour
  • Denial and minimization — difficulty acknowledging the extent of the problem, to oneself or to family
  • Damaged relationships — trust broken with family, partners, or friends due to addictive behaviour
  • Co-occurring mental health issues — anxiety, depression, or trauma that often exist alongside addiction
  • Family enabling patterns — well-meaning family members inadvertently supporting the addiction cycle
  • Withdrawal-related fear — anxiety about the physical or emotional discomfort of stopping

What Causes Addiction?

  • Neurobiological factors — repeated substance use or compulsive behaviour changes brain reward pathways, making the behaviour progressively harder to control through willpower alone
  • Underlying emotional pain — using substances or behaviours to numb anxiety, trauma, grief, or chronic stress
  • Family history and environment — a family history of addiction, or growing up in an environment where substance use was normalized
  • Social and peer influence — particularly significant during adolescence and young adulthood
  • Poor emotional regulation skills — turning to a substance or behaviour instead of healthier coping mechanisms
  • Digital environment factors — for behavioural addictions like internet and gaming addiction, design features specifically built to be compulsive

How Dr. Rabya Umman Helps You

  • Internationally recognized addiction training from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, giving her exposure to globally recognized, evidence-based addiction treatment frameworks.

  • AIIMS clinical experience treating substance use disorders directly, including complex cases involving co-occurring mental health conditions.

  • Specialized expertise in behavioural addiction, particularly internet and technology addiction — an area her own doctoral research focused on, which is increasingly common but often under-recognized compared to substance addiction.

  • A structured, non-judgmental treatment approach, recognizing addiction as a treatable condition rather than a moral failing — helping reduce the shame that often prevents people from seeking help.

  • Family involvement where appropriate, helping loved ones understand addiction, avoid enabling patterns, and support recovery in a healthy way.

  • Relapse prevention planning, not just initial treatment

building the specific coping skills and triggers-awareness needed for sustained recovery.

What is Addiction Therapy?

Addiction therapy is psychological treatment that helps people stop or reduce alcohol, tobacco, drug, gaming, betting or mobile use, treat the reasons behind the addiction, and stay in recovery. Addiction is a specialist area of Dr. Rabya Umman's clinical work.

How it works

  1. Screening and diagnosis with WHO tools (ASSIST, AUDIT)
  2. Motivational Interviewing to strengthen your own reasons to change
  3. CBT for addiction to manage cravings, triggers and high-risk situations
  4. Family therapy to rebuild trust and stop enabling
  5. Relapse prevention planning and recovery follow-up
  6. Coordination with physicians for medical detox and medicines when needed

How it is effective for mental health disorders

  • Alcohol and drug use disorders: Motivational Interviewing and CBT are among the most effective psychological treatments and reduce drinking, drug use and relapse.
  • Behavioural addictions (gaming, gambling): CBT reduces time spent and loss of control.
  • Co-existing anxiety, depression and trauma: treating them together improves recovery.
  • Families: family-involved approaches improve treatment engagement and wellbeing of family members.

Our addiction treatment process

  1. Safe & confidential first contact — Reach us by phone, WhatsApp or in person. Everything you share is private; families can also call first to seek guidance on how to approach a loved one.
  2. A welcoming first consultation — A calm, respectful space with unhurried time. We listen to your story without judgement.
  3. Understanding the problem — A detailed history: what, how much and how often you use; when it started; its effect on health, work, money and family.
  4. Finding the root cause — We explore the triggers and the reasons underneath: stress, loneliness, trauma, peer pressure, family conflict, anxiety, depression or ADHD.
  5. Screening — Standard WHO screening tools: ASSIST (Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) and AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), plus mood and anxiety screening.
  6. Psychological testing — Where needed, standardised tests of personality, mood, memory and attention to understand the whole person and detect any alcohol-related memory effects.
  7. Clear diagnosis & explanation — We explain the findings in simple language to you (and your family, with your consent): the type and severity of addiction and any co-existing condition.
  8. Personalised treatment plan — A written plan with goals, therapies, session frequency and, when needed, referral to a de-addiction physician or psychiatrist for safe medical detox and anti-craving medicines.
  9. Therapy — Motivational Interviewing to strengthen your own reasons to change; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to manage cravings, triggers and high-risk situations; stress management, emotional-regulation and life-skills training.
  10. Family therapy — Sessions with spouse, parents or children to rebuild trust, improve communication, set healthy boundaries and stop enabling — and to support family members' own wellbeing.
  11. Relapse prevention — A personal relapse-prevention plan: early warning signs, craving-coping skills, a support network and a clear action plan if a slip happens.
  12. Recovery follow-up — Regular follow-up sessions at planned intervals (for example weekly, then monthly) for at least a year, with booster sessions during high-risk times such as festivals, weddings or stressful life events.

Understanding addiction

Addiction is a treatable brain condition, not a character flaw. It can involve substances such as alcohol, tobacco and drugs, or behaviours such as gambling, gaming and endless scrolling.

Alcohol & Drug Addiction (Substance Use Disorders)

"Just one drink" becomes five? You promise to stop, but by evening the craving wins? Substance use disorder is repeated use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, opioids or other drugs that continues despite harm to health, family, studies or work (ICD-11 6C40–6C4H). ICD-11 separates a harmful pattern of use from dependence, where control is lost and withdrawal appears.

How common is it?

About 400 million people worldwide live with alcohol use disorders (WHO, 2024). In India, about 5 crore people have harmful or dependent alcohol use, and cannabis and opioid use is rising among youth (National Survey on Substance Use, 2019).

Who is at higher risk?

  • People who start in their teens
  • Family history of addiction
  • Peer pressure
  • Stress, trauma, anxiety, depression or ADHD
  • Easy availability
  • Men (though women are increasingly affected)

Signs & symptoms

  • Using more, or for longer, than planned; failed attempts to cut down
  • Strong cravings; needing more for the same effect
  • Withdrawal — shaking hands, sweating, restlessness, poor sleep, irritability
  • Neglecting family, work or studies; lying about use; borrowing or stealing money
  • Continuing despite liver problems, accidents, fights or legal trouble

What causes it?

Substances flood the brain's reward system with dopamine and slowly rewire it, so the brain begins to "need" them. Genes explain about half the risk; stress, trauma and environment do the rest.

How to know if you are struggling — you may relate if…

  • I need a drink to relax, sleep or face people.
  • My family keeps complaining, and I get angry when they bring it up.
  • I've tried to quit many times but always go back.

Gambling, Gaming & Mobile Addiction (Behavioural Addictions)

Planned to play for 20 minutes and it's 3 a.m. again? Lost money on betting apps but feel you must win it back? ICD-11 recognises gaming disorder (6C51) and gambling disorder (6C50): loss of control over the activity, giving it priority over everything else, and continuing despite harm, usually for 12 months or more. Problem smartphone and social media use follows the same pattern.

How common is it?

Gaming disorder affects about 2–3 in 100 gamers, most often teenage boys and young men. Online betting and fantasy-gaming problems are rising fast among young Indians.

Who is at higher risk?

  • Teens and young adults
  • Loneliness, boredom, anxiety, depression or ADHD
  • Unsupervised screen access
  • Easy access to betting apps

Signs & symptoms

  • Losing track of time; unable to cut down
  • Irritability or anger when the phone or game is taken away
  • Late nights, falling grades or work performance
  • Hiding usage, losing or borrowing money, withdrawing from family and friends

What causes it?

Apps and games are designed with reward loops — likes, levels, wins, near-misses — that trigger dopamine like a drug; stress and loneliness make escape more tempting.

How to know if you are struggling — you may relate if…

  • The first thing I do in the morning and the last thing at night is check my phone.
  • I've lied to my family about money I lost betting.

How Mind Detox Centre helps

Assessment of underlying anxiety, depression or ADHD, CBT for behavioural addiction, motivational interviewing, a personalised digital-detox plan, family therapy and financial safeguards for gambling.

Frequently asked questions

Is addiction counselling only for severe or long-term addiction?

No. Early intervention — even before an addiction feels "severe" — often leads to much better outcomes, and counselling is valuable at any stage.

Do you treat behavioural addictions like internet or gaming addiction, not just substance use?

Yes. This is a specific area of expertise for Dr. Rabya, including original research on internet addiction among students.

Can family members be involved in the treatment process?

Yes, when appropriate and with the client's consent — family involvement often significantly improves recovery outcomes.

Is this the same as a de-addiction hospital or rehab facility?

Mind Detox Centre provides outpatient psychological counselling and evidence-based therapy for addiction; for cases requiring medical detoxification or inpatient care, appropriate referrals are made alongside your counselling support.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. Your identity, records and test results are private and are not shared with anyone, including family or employers, without your written consent — except where required by law or to protect life.

Do I need to be admitted to a hospital?

Most people can be treated as outpatients. If medical detox or admission is needed, we refer you to a trusted physician or facility and continue your psychological treatment.

Can you help if my family member refuses treatment?

Yes. Family members can start sessions first; we guide you on how to approach your loved one and look after yourself meanwhile.

How long does recovery take?

Active treatment usually lasts 3–6 months, followed by at least a year of follow-up. Recovery is a process, and we stay with you through it.

Is addiction a disease or a choice?

The first use is a choice; addiction is a medical condition that changes the brain and makes stopping very hard without help.

Can I quit alcohol at home?

Mild use may be reduced with counselling, but heavy daily drinkers need medical supervision to stop safely.

Is mobile addiction a real disorder?

Gaming disorder is officially recognised in ICD-11, and problematic smartphone use is widely studied and treatable with CBT.
