What is Play Therapy?
Children don't always have the words to say "I'm scared" or "I'm angry." Play is a child's natural language, and toys are their words. In play therapy, children aged about 3–12 express and work through feelings using toys, puppets, sand trays, stories, drawing and games, guided by a trained psychologist.
How it works
- A safe playroom where the child leads and the therapist follows and reflects
- Structured games to teach coping, problem-solving and social skills
- Stories and role-play to process difficult experiences
- Regular parent sessions so progress continues at home
How it is effective for mental health disorders
- Childhood anxiety and fears: play-based CBT reduces worry, clinginess and school refusal.
- Anger and behaviour problems: research reviews show play therapy has a positive effect on children's behaviour, especially when parents are involved.
- Trauma, loss and family changes (divorce, new sibling, death): helps children process emotions safely.
- ADHD and autism: builds turn-taking, attention, emotional regulation and social skills.
- Selective mutism: a non-verbal, low-pressure way to build confidence.
Who can benefit
Children aged 3–12 with emotional, behavioural, social or adjustment difficulties.
What to expect
10–20 weekly sessions of 40–50 minutes, plus parent guidance sessions.
