What is ACT?
The harder you try not to think about something, the more it comes back — right? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, developed by Dr. Steven Hayes, helps you stop struggling with painful thoughts and feelings, make room for them, and move towards what truly matters to you.
How ACT works
ACT builds psychological flexibility through six processes:
- Acceptance — allowing feelings instead of fighting them
- Defusion — seeing thoughts as just thoughts ("I'm having the thought that I'm a failure")
- Present moment — mindful awareness of now
- Self-as-context — you are bigger than your thoughts
- Values — clarifying what matters most to you
- Committed action — taking steps towards those values
How ACT is effective for mental health disorders
- Anxiety and depression: research, including many controlled trials, shows ACT reduces symptoms and improves daily functioning.
- OCD: ACT helps people relate differently to intrusive thoughts and supports ERP.
- Chronic pain and health conditions: ACT improves coping and quality of life.
- Stress, burnout and psychosis: ACT reduces distress and improves wellbeing.
