What is Family Therapy?
When one person in a family struggles, everyone feels it — and everyone can be part of the solution. Family therapy sees the family as a system and works with members together to improve communication, resolve conflict and support the person who is unwell.
How it works
- Understanding each member's view and the family's patterns
- Improving communication and reducing blame
- Setting healthy boundaries and routines
- Psychoeducation about the condition affecting a family member
- Problem-solving together
How it is effective for mental health disorders
- Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: family intervention and psychoeducation are recommended in NICE guidelines and reduce relapse and hospital admissions.
- Eating disorders in young people: family-based treatment is a first-line approach for adolescent anorexia.
- Addiction: family involvement improves treatment engagement and recovery.
- Child and teen behaviour problems, depression and self-harm: family-based approaches improve outcomes and family relationships.
- Divorce, blended families and grief: helps families adjust together.
