What is ERP & Behaviour Therapy?
Behaviour therapy uses proven learning principles — exposure, reinforcement and habit change — to reduce fears and unhelpful behaviours. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is its specialised form for OCD: you gradually face what triggers your obsessions without doing the compulsion, until the anxiety naturally fades.
How it works
- Fear ladder: listing triggers from least to most anxiety-provoking
- Gradual exposure: facing each step, with the therapist's support
- Response prevention: resisting rituals, checking or reassurance-seeking
- Habit reversal: awareness and a competing response for tics, hair-pulling and skin-picking
- Reward systems and shaping: building positive behaviour in children
How it is effective for mental health disorders
- OCD: ERP is the gold-standard psychological treatment recommended by international guidelines; most people who complete it experience significant reduction in symptoms.
- Phobias: exposure therapy is highly effective, often within a few sessions.
- Panic disorder and agoraphobia: exposure to feared sensations and places reduces panic.
- Tics and Tourette syndrome: behavioural therapy for tics (CBIT) reduces tic severity.
- Trichotillomania and skin-picking: habit reversal training is the treatment of choice.
- ADHD and child behaviour problems: behaviour therapy and parent training improve behaviour at home and school.

Frequently asked questions
Will ERP make my anxiety worse?
It rises briefly during exposure, then falls — which is how the brain learns it is safe.
