Not every child with ADHD runs around the classroom. Many — especially girls — are quietly inattentive, daydreaming and forgetting instructions. They are often labelled “careless” or “lazy” when they are struggling with a brain-based condition.
What ADHD looks like
Inattention
- Careless mistakes and unfinished homework
- Seems not to listen when spoken to
- Loses books, bottles and stationery
- Easily distracted
Hyperactivity
- Fidgets or leaves the seat
- Runs or climbs at the wrong times
- Talks non-stop
Impulsivity
- Blurts out answers
- Can’t wait for a turn
- Interrupts others
Signs parents often miss
- Homework that should take 30 minutes takes three hours.
- Teachers say the child is bright but “never pays attention”.
- Frequent daydreaming and forgetting what was just said.
- Emotional outbursts and low frustration tolerance.
What causes ADHD?
ADHD is mainly genetic (it is 70–80% inherited) and involves differences in the brain areas that control attention and self-control. Poor parenting and sugar do not cause ADHD.
How ADHD is assessed
A complete assessment includes parent and teacher rating scales, attention tests and IQ or learning screening to rule out other causes. Treatment includes behaviour therapy, parent training, classroom strategies and, where needed, a psychiatric referral.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can ADHD be diagnosed?
ADHD is usually diagnosed from around age 6, once school demands make attention difficulties clearer, although signs may be noticed earlier.
Is every active child hyperactive?
No. Many children are energetic. ADHD is considered when inattention or hyperactivity is persistent, present in more than one setting and affects learning or relationships.
How is ADHD assessed at Mind Detox Centre?
Through a clinical interview with parents and child, standardised rating scales, and where needed IQ and learning assessments to rule out other causes.
