What is a Personality Disorder?
A personality disorder is a type of mental health condition where a person experiences enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviate significantly from cultural expectations. These rigid and pervasive patterns lead to significant distress or impairment in relationships, work, or other areas of life. Personality disorders usually begin in adolescence or early adulthood.
When Should You Consult a Clinical Psychologist?
- Difficulty in Relationships: Patterns of intense and unstable relationships (e.g., excessive dependence, conflict, or withdrawal).
- Chronic Emotional Distress: Persistent feelings of emptiness, anger, or mood swings.
- Maladaptive Behaviors: Impulsive actions that lead to negative consequences (e.g., substance abuse, risky behaviors, or self-harm).
- Identity and Self-Esteem Issues: Unstable sense of self or identity and chronic feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, or grandiosity.
- Unsuccessful Attempts to Manage Alone: Previous attempts to address these challenges through self-help, support groups, or lifestyle changes have not been effective.
